The so-called Maiden mummy of a 15-year-old Incan girl who was sacrificed 500 years ago is giving up some secrets, revealing the teenager suffered from a bacterial lung infection at the time of her death, scientists report Wednesday (July 25).
The researchers analyzed tissue proteins, rather than DNA, from the Maiden and another young Inca mummy who died at the same time.
Over the last decade, DNA techniques have proven useful in helping solve ancient mysteries, such as how King Tut died. But these techniques aren't without faults. For example, finding evidence of a malaria-causing parasite in King Tut's system doesn't necessarily mean the Egyptian king suffered any malaria symptoms. Additionally, the environment can easily contaminate DNA samples, if researchers aren't careful.

On the other hand, analyzing a sample's proteins, which are less susceptible to environmental contamination, yields a whole different set of information. "Being the expression of DNA, proteins really show you what the body is producing at the time when the individual is being sampled — or, in our case, at the time of death," study researcher Angelique Corthals, a forensic anthropologist at the City University of New York, told LiveScience. In particular, proteins can tell you if the body's immune system has activated to fight a disease, she added. [The Mummy Quiz: Test Your Smarts]
Llullaillaco mummies
In their study, Corthals and her colleagues took lip swabs from two Andean Inca mummies, a 7-year-old boy and "the Maiden," as well as samples from the boy's bloodied cloak. The two child mummies, discovered in 1999, were originally buried on the summit of the Argentinian volcano Llullaillaco, 22,100 feet (6,739 meters) above sea level, after being sacrificed in a ceremonial ritual.

Past research found the boy and girl had been fattened up before sacrifice, being fed a typical peasant diet of potatoes and other common vegetables up until a year before their sacrifice, when evidence suggests they were given "elite" foods like maize and dried llama meat.
Once sacrificed, the freezing temperatures, among other factors, naturally preserved their fattened bodies. [Photos of the Inca Child Mummies]
"What I really wanted to do originally was see where the blood I found on the mummies' clothing and lips came from," Corthals said. "But we found a whole lot more than we were expecting."
Archaeologists also found a third mummy, a 6-year-old girl, along with the other two. This mummy appears to have been struck by lightning, which could potentially interfere with test results, so Corthals and her team didn't take any samples from it.

Lung infection found
The researchers used a technique called shotgun proteomics. They placed their samples into a device called a mass spectrometer, which broke all of the sample's proteins into their constituent parts, amino-acid chains. Sophisticated software compared these parts with existing proteins of the human genome to determine the actual proteins in the samples, Corthals explained. "You couldn't use this technique for an organism that we don't have the complete genome for," she said.
They found that the Maiden's profile of proteins match that of a chronic respiratory infection patient. X-rays taken of the Maiden's lungs after she was discovered also showed signs of a lung infection. To see if the Maiden was harboring anything that could cause such an infection, they turned to DNA analysis and discovered evidence of bacteria in the genus Mycobacterium, which is known to cause upper respiratory-tract infections and tuberculosis (TB). Statistical models suggested the bacterium falls into the cluster group that causes TB, but the exact species isn't known, likely because its DNA hasn't been sequenced yet.
The Llullaillaco boy didn't have signs of disease or pathogenic bacteria.
The research shows that shotgun proteomics can play a critical role in determining the disease or death in archeological, medical and criminal cases, Corthals said, adding that the method may even be able to determine which pathogen is the killer in a case of multiple infections. For now, Corthals is interested in seeing whether the technique can be used with less pristine samples, such as skeletal material or Egyptian mummies.
Down the line, the protein technique's utility will likely go beyond just archaeology, researchers said. "I expect [the method's] biggest impact will be in criminal forensic science," Corthals said.
The new study is detailed online today (July 25) in the journal PLoS One.

Heath & Fitness Tips

1 For a lovely definition around your shoulder blades, stand with your arms straight out to the side at shoulder height and make small circles as fast as you can.
2 Just 30 minutes of dancing can burn up to 150 calories. Play a song and dance in the privacy of your room or join a salsa class to tone up your body easily.
3 Combine walking and jogging for a less tiring exercise. Walk at a brisk pace for 4 minutes and then jog for a minute and then repeat the process.
4 Tone your tummy by lying on your back with legs facing the ceiling; bend your knees and lower your feet and then raise your legs back up straight
5 A brisk walk for 30 minutes every day is a great way to maintain weight. As you walk, over-exaggerate your arm movements and pull back your shoulders and tummy.
6 Hold your shoulders down and back, pull your navel back towards the spine, stand on the balls of your feet and rise up and down for a quick stretch.
7 For toned calves, face the staircase with your heels over the edge and rise up onto the balls of your feet 10 times using the banister or wall for balance.
8 To tone your abs even when you’re seated, pull your tummy in while breathing in and then further in as you breathe out. Repeat this till your tummy feels tired!
9 Exercise by standing with your back and your hands flat against the wall behind you, and push as hard as possible, holding for 10 seconds.
10 Get rid of tensions by sitting cross legged, walking your fingers as far forward as possible, taking deep breaths and then uncurling to an upright position.
11 A quick exercise while sitting in a car or plane: with your heels on the floor, raise your toes, and fit exercise in your hectic life by walking instead of driving, picking up the paper instead of getting it delivered or doing breathing exercises for toned abs.

13 A regular stretching program can help maintain good posture and flexibility.
14 Add fitness to your daily routine without going to the gym! Hang out your washing, run up and down stairs – all of this helps.
15 Standing up straight makes you look taller, slimmer and also more confident. For a good posture, try to breathe using your tummy rather than your shoulders.
16 Swimming is great way to feel healthy, relaxed and revitalized. It gives you a full body workout and is great for anyone with injuries or arthritis.
17 Even mild dehydration leaves you feeling tired, so keep your energy levels up by drinking water between every cup of tea or coffee, and along with every meal.
18 Keep your shoulders back, neck long and legs uncrossed whenever sitting, as a good posture is important for a healthy spine and the muscles surrounding it.
19 A simple way to a beautiful, slimmer shape is by taking brisk walks every day using your tummy to breathe rather than your ribs and shoulders.
20 Dancing is a fantastic way to relax. In the privacy of your room play a song and let your hair down for 15 minutes to feel invigorated and reduce tension.
21 Go for a brisk 10-20 minute walk everyday.
22 Think of movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience. Choose an activity you really love – go for an early morning walk, do yoga or ride a bicycle.
23 No need for a step class. Just go up and down the staircase every day in 5 sets. For optimal fitness you should be ideally out of breath after the second set.

Daily monsoon foot care tip you must follow

Daily monsoon foot care tip you must follow

Your feet are at a high risk of contracting diseases in the monsoon season. Dr. Govind Bisht, Senior Consultant, Podiatry with Delhi based Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute shares daily footcare tips to prevent diseases and build up of bacteria.

Apply moisturiser:

Dr. Govind Bisht gives you an easy tip to fight fungal infection, "Before going to sleep during monsoon, apply moisturiser containing 7% to 10% of urea and paraffin on your feet. This will help you in getting rid of the dead skin (keratolytic effect) while keeping the feet clean, smooth, and allergy-free. Avoid putting moisturiser between the toes as web spaces have moist skin and putting moisturiser will increase dampness and may invite fungal infection."

Trim your nails:

This is one basic personal hygiene tips everyone should follow as it will prevent build up of germs, Dr. Bisht explains, "Long nails pull and store ample of dirt and bacteria. Always trim your nails in straight line and file the corners. Avoid cutting too deep and leaving corners with sharp margins may lead ingrown toes nails, well kept nails will help in keeping away germs from the feet."

Get a pedicure done:

Mani-pedi may be a fad among women, but a pedicure can help you prevent accumulation of bacteria. Dr. Bisht says, "Take out some time from your busy schedule and visit the nearest parlour for a pedicure, specifically during rains. Make sure the instruments and the place is neat and clean. Avoid pedicure from unhygienic places, it may be source of fungal and bacterial infection."

Home remedy for foot care:
He gives you a home remedy for pedicure, "If your budget does not permit, do it the easy way at home. Dip your feet in lukewarm water for 15 minutes and dry it with a soft cotton towel. Do not forget to add 2-3 drops of antiseptic liquid in the water. Diabetic patients should avoid putting feet in warm water, at times because of loss of sensation they may land in burn injuries."

Clean and keep your feet dry:

Monsoon season propels the growth of bacteria and germs, therefore Dr. Bisht adds that it is important to keep your feet dry, "It is a simple yet an essential thing to wash your feet after an outing during monsoon. As the season gives rise to fungus, bacteria, and germs, it becomes a necessity to clean your feet immediately after returning from office or school. Following the clean-up, pat them dry. Wear shoes rather than sandals while going out as shoes give the full protection compared to the sandals which make the feet wet, resulting in fungal and bacterial infections."

Foot Scrubbing:

Wash out all dead cells to prevent any fungal infection, Dr. Bisht, Podiatrist explains, "When you go for bathing, soak your feet in the water about 5 to 10 minutes. Add any soap liquids, shampoo to the water. After 10 minutes wash your feet with the scrubbers made for feet to chuck out the dead or damaged skin."

Note: Any sign of fungal or bacterial infection as redness, swelling, itching, and warm skin associated with pain without injury must not be neglected and a visit to physician is advisable for proper diagnosis and treatment.

5 easy tips to get rid of back pain
5 easy tips to get rid of back pain
Having a back pain is irritating. And most of us experience this problem at some point, forcing us to visit a doctor. Back pain can be of different forms - ranging from a constant dull ache to abrupt sharp soreness resulting from various reasons.

Back pain happens due to a sprain or other accidental injury. Diseases such as arthritis (inflammation of one or more joints), fibromyalgia (a disorder that causes muscle pain and fatigue), and spinal stenosis (abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal that may occur in any of the regions of the spine) also cause back pain. Some people get back pain due to overweight or sedentary.

However, here are some simple self-help tips you can follow for a quick and effective back pain relief:

Exercise: Regular physical activity is often the best remedy for back pain. Health experts suggest that simple exercise like walking can be very helpful as people gets out of their sitting posture and puts the body in a neutral and upright position.

It is always best to consult your physician or orthopaedist for a list of low-impact exercises suitable for your age as well as the types of pain that you have.

Stretch: Apart from exercise, stretching is vital for preventing back pain and staying flexible. Stretching is helpful in recovering from a back injury. Always stretch before exercise or other strenuous physical activity and also before bed.

Sleep well: Always sleep on a firm surface for back pain relief rather than soft mattresses that push your back out of alignment. Also, sleep on your side to shrink any curve in your spine.

Maintain good posture: Poor posture can lead to back pain or other health issues. If you are standing, stand up straight and keep your weight balanced on your feet. Make sure that your feet are shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly relaxed. Your shoulders should be straight and are in a straight line with your ears and hips.

While sitting, sit in a chair that is designed to keep your back straight. Switch your sitting positions often and taking periodical walk around the office will help relieve stress. If you need to sit for a long period of time, rest your feet on a low stool or on a foot rest.

Keep a healthy weight: Eat a healthy diet filled with fruits and vegetables and low on processed foods to avoid excessive weight. Staying fit is one of the best remedies for back pain as extra pounds can stress your back causing further hurt.

Quit smoking: Smoking doesn’t just damage your lungs, it can also impair your back.
Smoking cuts blood flow to the lower spine and causes the spinal discs to degenerate.
Studies have shown that smokers are more likely to have back pain than their peers who do not smoke.

How to Become a Very Healthy Person

How to Keep Healthy

  1. .Maintain healthy eating habits. Avoid fad diets like the plague; to get all the nutrition the human body needs, eat carbs, protein, and fat (yes, even fat!) at every meal.[1] By doing so, you'll have a healthy heart, healthy brain, and a fully functional immune system. Eating highly varied foods will also help insure you get all the vitamins, minerals, oils, and enzymes your body craves.
  2. To lose weight, you must burn more calories than you consume.[2] That’s all there is to it. With the exception of sweets, eliminating one area of the food pyramid from your diet won’t replace the need to simply consume fewer calories.
  • Avoid skipping meals, which is hard on the body. Some people even recommend eating up to 6 mini meals a day instead of 3 large ones, which can sustain energy and steady blood-sugar levels[3]; however, many people end up turning their “mini meals” into junk food sessions and end up consuming not just more calories, but emptier ones.[4] Be honest with yourself before making this choice.
  • If you want to work on portion control, eat low energy-density foods (i.e. more substance, fewer calories). Fruits and vegetables, for example, are packed with not only vitamins and minerals, but also water and fiber, making them take longer to digest and keeping you full longer.[5]
  • Drink more water. This helps flush metabolic wastes to keep your metabolism in top shape.[6] Water can also help you feel fuller, so drink at least a half-gallon (2 liters) of water every day (or more if you are active or live in a hot climate).
  • 2.Sleep well every night. Adults should get 7 to 9 hours daily, whereas school-aged children should get 10 to 11.[7] One of the absolute most important ways of improving the quality of your sleep is to do it in complete darkness, as even small amounts of light interfere with the chemicals that tell your body to rest.[8] If you can’t eliminate the light in your room, wear an eye mask. Another one of the best ways to improve your sleep is to exercise.[9]
  1. Sleeping is also a good way to prevent overeating. A study by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrated that men who only slept for 4 hours consumed, on average, 500 more calories than they did after sleeping for 8.[10]
  1. 3.Stick to an exercise regimen. If you don’t want to pay for a gym membership, try strength-training at home. The muscle you develop will help increase your metabolism: the bodies of muscular people burn more calories even while they’re at rest.[11] To keep your heart in shape, do cardio. One particularly effective way to improve your cardiovascular health is to do interval training, which means alternating between low- and high-intensity activity. This has been shown to be a quick and extremely effective way to improve heart health and endurance.[12] (Anyone over the age of 60 or who has heart disease, high blood pressure, or arthritis should consult a doctor before attempting interval training.)
    1. 4.Pursue your passions. No, not everyone can make a living playing sold-out concerts, traveling around the world trying new foods, or churning out bestselling fantasy novels, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on your dreams. Set some time aside to practice an instrument, do art, take photos, build models, weld, bake gourmet cakes, or whatever else enriches your free time. If you want to learn something new, take an evening or weekend class. If you can’t think of anything interesting off the top of your head, take the time to find a hobby.
    1. If you’re convinced that there isn’t enough time in the day to pursue any outside activities, try to cut back on a time-wasting activity like channel-surfing or hitting refresh on Facebook.
    1. 5.Limit your vices. Quit smoking, beat drug addiction, and, if necessary, stop drinking. Avoid other risky behaviors like speeding, fighting, unsafe sex, and excessive thrill-seeking.
6.Improve your psychological health. Prioritize developing meaningful relationships above simply being social. Practice self-disclosure, which means sharing things that are unique to you (your thoughts, fears, favorite movies and music, pet peeves, etc.) with those you trust. This has been shown to be of immense importance to not only forging deeper interpersonal connections, but also feeling validated emotionally.[13]
Learn how to have a healthy relationship. If you think you’re in a manipulative or controlling relationship, get out of it. It’s better to stand strong on your own than be held back by a so-called companion.
    • Learn how to understand your emotions so that you can truly know yourself.
    • Learn how to cope with emotional pain and, if necessary, deal with emotional abuse.
    • Enrich your sex life. In addition to the psychological benefits of a healthy sex life such as reduced depression, this has been shown to have a wide variety of health advantages including increased immunity, decreased pain, and better fitness.[14] Better still, it’s something you can do with or without a partner. If you do have a partner or partners, be sure to practice safe sex.
    1. 7.Keep your mind limber. Read more, solve puzzles, play games of strategy, learn to play an instrument, improve your memory, and never stop learning, even if you feel like you’re “past your prime.” In addition to the fact that staying mentally active is emotionally rewarding, studies have shown that there is a correlation between mentally-challenging activities and a decreased risk of Alzheimer's.[15]
    2. 8.Be hygienic. Wash your hands thoroughly after coming into contact with a sick person, using the bathroom, or anything else that could make you sick. (If you’re not sure what “thoroughly” entails, sing Happy Birthday to You in your head as you scrub.) In addition to flossing regularly, brush your teeth and tongue at least twice daily to limit plaque and harmful bacteria.
    3. 9.Make little lifestyle changes. Don’t tire yourself out by making large gestures toward health without addressing the small stuff. Instead of running yourself ragged at the gym three days a week, park farther away from the store, walk the dog more often, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or weed your garden; instead of attacking your veggies and dip distractedly in front of the computer or TV, set time aside to slowly enjoy each meal and prevent mindless overeating.[4] Get your new habits to stick by tackling them at the grass-roots level.
    4. 10.Remember to do everything in moderation – including moderation. Turning each aspect of your life into something you need to check off a list can not only make you feel trapped, but also make you more likely fall (or possibly even throw yourself) off the wagon. Allowing yourself the occasional indulgence to blow off steam will make you much more satisfied with your new lifestyle choices.
11.Know that friends play an important role. Many studies show that people with a wide range of social contacts get sick less than those who don't. Friends make you laugh, and laughing is also an important part of health.

Born in Uttar Pradesh in 1925, he has received numerous national and international awards, including the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour, the National Integration Award, the Communal Harmony Award, and the National Citizen's Award, and many others.
Khabar: How do you see Islam and Muslims in the world today?
Khan: Islam advocates equality, peace and brotherhood, but in contemporary times, xenophobia has influenced the Muslim community. Islam urges Muslims to be the ambassadors of peace and brotherhood, but a section of Muslims on the other hand are involved in extremism and prejudice. Intolerance is highly denounced in Islam, and Muslims should exhibit tolerance and promote peace and brotherhood in all circumstances.
Khabar: Have Muslim clergy failed to play their role in spreading Islam in its real spirit? Prophet Muhammad said, "When leaders and clergy are on the right path, people will be on the same path".
Khan: Muslim clergy tend to be ignorant to their duty and unfortunately have stayed away from the noble mission of Dawah (proper presentation, understanding and appreciation of Islam in its real spirit). In my opinion, they have failed to remove misconceptions about the religion, and contributed in bringing about a good deal of moral degradation among Muslims.
Islam stands for justice, peace and harmony. Extremism is not admissible in Islam. As far as the role of clergy is concerned, Prophet Muhammad says, "The Ulema (scholar) is one who knows the era and people he represents". When clergy is unaware or unmindful of the affairs of the world, they are bound to lack vision and wisdom.
Khabar: There is a lot of confusion regarding jihad in Islam. What exactly does Holy Qur'an says about jihad?
Khan: Jihad means Dawah. People have misunderstood the concept of jihad. Islam does not permit extremism in all its manifestations, misconstrued for jihad by some unscrupulous elements.
Those who kill people for any reason are terrorists and criminals. They do not represent Islam at all but their own agenda and covetousness. Nobody has the right to snatch anyone's life. Mankind belongs to Almighty Allah, who is supreme and the only authority [allowed] to snatch life. Qur'an describes Muslims as a "moderate community" and urges them to be merciful, kind and tolerant towards people of other communities as well.
Khabar: How do you view disorder and violence in different parts of the world? Who in your opinion is responsible for such inhuman acts?
Khan: Criminals and terrorists commit such inhuman acts. Such extremists have no religion. We need to denounce inhuman acts committed by these people for their own vested interests.
Khabar: In what situation and for which offences does Islam permit capital punishment?
Khan: Almighty God has created man with utmost respect and dignity. No one is allowed to snatch a life or commit murder of a human being. In Islam, capital punishment is permitted when somebody is murdered in cold blood.
Khabar: What is the legality of blasphemy in Islam? Is capital punishment the only way to deal with blasphemy?
Khan: There is no prescribed law for blasphemy in Islam. Muslims should exhibit tolerance and demonstrate wisdom. Violent protests against Danish cartoonist (Kurt Westergaard) and Salman Rushdie for their anti-Islamic views were a waste of energy. If someone writes against the Prophet Muhammad, we should have sound knowledge to dislodge his propaganda and prove him wrong. We should be well-equipped with logic and reasons to counter unscrupulous elements who want to create confusion with regard to Islam.
Those who embraced Islam in early ages were the opponents of Prophet Muhammad. Prophet Muhammad never expressed anger against them or awarded any kind of punishment. Exhibiting high moral and character, Prophet Muhammad converted his enemies into loyalists and trusted friends.
Khabar: What is the significance of the Hijab (veil) in Islam? Is head cover mandatory for girls in schools and colleges? Most Western colleges don't permit veils.
Khan: Hijab is not what women and girls wear in present times. Schools, colleges and universities have their own set of rules. Girl students should follow and abide by them. Islam does not permit to create disorder in any institution in any circumstances. If you do not like some rules and regulations of an institution, that does not mean you will create problems for others by enforcing your own set of rules.
Islam urges you to be an honest and honourable citizen. One should be loyal to his or her country and likewise to the rules governing an educational institution. You can never be a good Muslim unless you are a good citizen of your country.
Khabar: What role do you see for madrassas in promotion of peace and quality education?
Khan: The madrassas have a limited role and they can't go beyond that. You cannot expect madrassas to produce Nobel laureates, eminent scientists and reformists. Madrassas teach you about performing Namaz and Hajj (Prayers and Pilgrimage). Worldly knowledge is a must for producing eminent persons in the field of science, information technology and engineering, and Islam is not against it.
